We are food to children who have no food,

We are a home to children who have no home,

We are peace to children who know no peace,

And we are love to children who have never known love.

We are Archway.

Welcome to Archway!!

Taking children from the despair of the sewers
To the joy of productive lives.

Archway provides hundreds of homeless children in Bucharest Romania with food, clothing, and medical care each week. It also provides a permanent home to 26 of the youngest children.  The organization is now working towards developing programs to teach our older children the skills that will help them enter society as productive citizens.

People from many countries contribute to Archway or come to Bucharest to help bring food and clothing to the children in the streets, to construct residential facilities for them, and to help with the day to day operations of the children's center.

We cordially invite you to learn more about Archway by exploring this site.  We would be very happy to have you join us in the work we are doing either by volunteering in your own country or by spending some time with us in Bucharest. And certainly we welcome donations of any amount to help care for our kids.

News from and about Romania

  • The government of Romania has offered to give Archway a four story a building.  It could be used to provide day care to poor parents who cannot afford private day care, as a center for non-governmental organizations that cannot afford their own offices, or for other functions.  We are exploring how we can get funds to rehabilitate the building.

  • We have committed ourselves to developing a vocational training program for our older kids.  This will draw heavily on the program our director developed at Metro- North for recent immigrants.

  • We are exploring using some of the clothing that is regularly donated to us to stock a second hand clothing store staffed by our older kids.  It would provide them with invaluable business training experience.
A recent article in the NY Times highlighted the problems Romania faces in dealing with its thousands of abandoned children and the troubling laws of the country that make foreign adoption impossible.
